October 2023 Board Meeting

10/11/23 held hybrid in person/virtual called at 8:10 PM

In attendance:

Wade Robbins, Brian LaVoie, Marc Padin, John D Knight III, Daniel Dyla, Brandon Stanko, Michael Roman, Ed Olson, and (minutes by) John Garland.

Recap of Massive Fall Out:

Overall, a success, with 200 riders, great weather, and earned a nominal amount of money. Can improve on fundraising (50/50 etc), signage, online signup process, and vendor participation.

Recap of appearance at Shelden MTB Fest:

Also successful. The park estimates 1500 people involved. Looking forward to next year.

Bike Patrol played a key role at both events and deserve recognition.

Social media:

CRAMBA should advocate that all rules of our MOUs be followed regarding chainsaw use and unsanctioned work. We certainly welcome volunteers, however, need to respect land managers and their rules.

Merchandise:

More swag to be purchased. Need quotes for water bottles. Custom aluminum ball cups for ¡Ay Cramba! was also brought up.

Upcoming events:

12/3/23 Global Fat Bike Day at Bloomer Park (waiting for approval) Noon-3PM backwards signed laps and pizza.

2/3/24 (backup is 2/17/24) ¡Ay Cramba! It’s cold outside - fat bike festival @ River Bends Park

Financials:

CRAMBA has $40,177 in our account with no outstanding bills.

Trail updates:

Bald Mountain South looking to get approval on WIP grant for remodel of trails. A connection needs to be made from the Paint Creek Trail to Kern Rd, south of Clarkston Rd.

We will need CRAMBA to lead a volunteer build of a boardwalk through low lands.

Stony Creek Shelden Trails getting updated trail coordinator structure to better manage trail days and communications with the park.

Bloomer Park is wrapping up construction and CRAMBA has renewed an MOU with the Rochester Hills Parks and Natural Resources department and proposing developments to the trail. CRAMBA also has the intent to advocate for a cycling related space to replace the velodrome (slated for removal in the next year or two).

Elections of 2024 CRAMBA Board

Current Chair, Wade Robbins will step down due to term limits and the board thanks him for his dedication to our mission. Wade will continue to help in leadership and trail coordination, however he will no longer be on the board. Brian LaVoie will step down from position of vice-chair and remain a member at large.

Elections:

John Garland was nominated and seconded as the new Chair.

Daniel Dyla was nominated and seconded as the new Vice-chair.

Marc Padin will remain as treasurer.

The current secretary position is vacant and duties will be covered by board members collectively until filled.

Remaining members include: John D Knight III, Michael Roman, Brandon Stanko, Jen Chapman, Brian LaVoie, and Ed Olson.

Meeting held Tuesday August 9th 2023

Finances

Just over $39,000 in account with all outstanding balances paid

Motion to approve $100 per trail day per month without prior authorization for volunteers passed unanimously

Trail Updates

Addison Oaks

A trail modification to remove bumps from the last downhill is completed. In the future they may be brought back with a bypass route.

Waiting on approval for trail days. Connector to Bald Mountain North still awaiting state approval.

Bald Mountain

Bald Mountain is still pursuing a WIP grant from the state for funding to be used in the South Unit. Bald Mountain is requesting CRAMBA assist with a boardwalk over a low area once a Paint Creek connector to Bald Mountain South unit is done. Property managers want to replace the Conklin connector by reopening a previous connector near the old sledding hill due to protected rattlesnake population. New connector may provide better access to the south unit.

Bloomer

Bloomer Park is currently closed to vehicle traffic through mid October. CRAMBA has submitted a trail report including current assessment and proposed development to the trail system, including MTB purpose built features and some new single track. We are waiting on approval from the director of Rochester Hills Parks. The International Velodrome at Bloomer Park is slated to be removed in the next two years, and CRAMBA will be working on a proposal for a pump track or skills park. This is preliminary, and other proposals will be submitted to Rochester Hills.

Stony Creek

Aaron Barla stepped down as trail coordinator and the board thanks him for his time and service. Looking for a new trail coordinator.

Trail day to focus on trimming back overgrowth planned for August 19th 2023 from 9AM to noon.

Membership numbers steady year over year. Slight increase from last year, but decrease from the previous year

Other

Waiting on shirts purchased for board, trail coordinators, and volunteers. Still need to get quotes for koozies or other swag items.

Construction at Yates is supposed to wrap up by the end of August.

There is a road construction project on Orion Rd at Stoney Creek Rd. A roundabout will replace that intersection with Conklin Rd having a “T” intersection with Orion Rd. north of the roundabout. The construction should be finished in November. Both of these projects impact riders commuting between CRAMBA trails. CRAMBA encourages all riders to follow local rules, be safe, wear a helmet, use blinking lights, and avoid construction zones.

New CRAMBA Website

The CRAMBA board are proud to introduce the new cramba.org website! With simplified and improved navigation, updated content, and some new pages, we hope it will be a valuable resource for our community.

Refreshed look and feel

Using the CRAMBA blue our members already know and love, we’ve created a simpler and more modern design. With simplified navigation and better discoverability, it will be easier than ever for our members to use the website to discover group rides, learn about trail days and other volunteer opportunities, and find local mountain biking events.

New events page

Use the new events page to find out about local races, CRAMBA events, trail days, and more! Events do not need to be CRAMBA official events and we’re happy to highlight events in the area that promote mountain biking and support our local trails. If you would like your event listed on the events page, email board@cramba.org.

Updated trails pages

With updated and corrected content, images from our local riders, and an improved look and feel, we hope the new trail pages will be a valuable resource for our members. If you have a correction, idea, feedback, or images to share on the website, please email us at board@cramba.org.

More coming soon

Stay tuned as we update the new website with news, group rides, events, trail days, volunteer opportunities, and more! If you have an idea, correction, or just want to leave your feedback, we would love to hear from you at board@cramba.org.

May 2023 Board Meeting

Attendance: Dan Dyla, Brian LaVoie, Ed Olsen, Jen Chapman, Wade Robbins, Michael Roman

Minutes by Dan Dyla

Meeting held Wednesday May 17th 2023

Bald Mountain

  • Money from COVID-era trail improvement programs will not be allocated to Bald Mountain as previously discussed

Friendship Park

  • Official opening day attendance of around 60 people. Attendees had a good time and people enjoyed the trail

  • Considering changing trail direction on alternating days

Trail Building Tools

  • Motion to buy an electric chainsaw passed unanimously

CRPT Trail Coordinator

  • Jeremy to meet with Jacob Isaacson to discuss trail coordinator responsibilities

Chapter Meeting

  • Date: June 14th

  • Location: Stony Creek

Events

  • Chose Feb 3rd 2024 for Ay CRAMBA with Feb 17th as a backup date. Plans to be finalized in Basecamp

  • Discussed Chris Westerlund’s comment on Facebook asking why MFO and Shelden Trail Fest are not on the same day. Decided events conflict too much with each other. Many people spend the whole day at each event and having them on the same day would prevent that. Conversely, many people can’t spend the whole day at either event and that would mean they can’t attend both. Finally, the route may not include Stony this year.

Website Updates

  • New website ready to go live

  • Currently missing library files page

  • Decided to send the draft website to the trail coordinators so they could check the accuracy of their trail pages

  • Decided to include non-cramba events and group rides for anyone that reaches out and asks to be included on the website. This includes non-mountainbiking cycling groups if they want to be included such as gravel rides. Some of these groups have made donations to CRAMBA in the past and many CRAMBA members are in these groups.

Social Media

  • Discussed Kurt G’s Strava post in which he raised concerns about the official Strava group having many non-CRAMBA members. We discussed options, but decided policing who can and cannot be in the group is something we’re not going to do at this time.
